Optional Subject

Political Science & International Relations

Strategy

UPSC revised its syllabus in 2012, after which the role of Politics, Science and International Relations as an optional subject has increased. The popularity of this optional subject is due to its establishment as PSIR and the success of a large number of students in the final selection list of UPSC every year for the last decade.
The syllabus of PSIR looks very detailed but if PSIR is analysis along with the essay on General Studies then the syllabus becomes very brief. The role of PSIR is seen as an optional subject and in all the four question papers of General Studies and in the essay.

  • 1. General Studies paper I has positive role of PSIR (National Movement and Indian Society).
  • 2. General Studies paper II is completely based on PSIR syllabus.
  • 3. General Education paper III has positive role of PSIR 20-25.
  • 4. General Studies paper IV has useful role of Western and Indian political thinkers included in PSIR syllabus.
  • 5. Topics included in essay are definitely political and international issues.
  • 6. PSIR is a conceptual optional subject due to which it becomes necessary to develop understanding of this subject.
